How to make this children's Centaur Costume
by Nichole Heller
This costume portrays the mythical centaur, half man half horse. In purchasing your fabric for this costume, you'll want to select a fabric that will be in keeping with this theme. I purchased a beige-colored soft suede fabric for the horse's body. For the man's hair and the horse's mane & tail I purchased a long, black wig. The "man" part of this costume was a purchased "muscle man" shirt. The "horse" part of the costume takes a bit more preparation. Shaping the horse's body: I used cardboard to shape the horse's back, stomach and back legs. Around the outside of the cardboard form, I placed some cotton stuffing to make the costume plush and soft-looking like a horse. Next, I sewed on the suede fabric, along with hot gluing the horse's mane and tail on. For the front legs, I sewed a pair of padded pants in this same material and attached it to the body of the costume. Adding wheels: From the pictures above, you can see that my son's legs became the front legs of the horse. To make it easier for him to pull the weight of the rest of the costume, I attached two wheels to the back hooves of the horse. Next, I covered the wheels with black material to resemble the natural color of hooves. Putting it all together: After stepping into the costume, my son next put on a pair of suspenders. We attached the ends to the costume to help him pull the weight of the horse. Over this, he put on the muscle t-shirt and tucked it in. On went the wig and false beard, and black shoes & socks were used to look like the horse's hooves. The costume was finished! We got the idea for this homemade Centaur costume, because my son loves horses yet wanted something with a beard...and there it was! This sounds difficult to make...which some parts were...but it finally turned out great. My son can't wait to wear it again! I've got to admit that I just had a blast making this! Summary of materials needed: Cardboard, wheels from a rolling chair, wire, a wig, suede fabric, thread, a muscle man shirt, pants, hot glue, clippers (to cut wire), cotton, suspenders, and time!
