As you can tell from the costume pictures above, my little girl was all smiles wearing the Bag of Groceries costume I made her for Halloween. It's fun to make, and relatively quick & inexpensive, too. You should know how to use a hot glue gun, but other specialized crafts knowledge is not needed.
List of Materials for the Bag of Groceries costume
Before beginning, you should collect everything you need for the project. Once everything's assembled, you can make the costume in only a few hour's time.1.) Cardboard box 2.) Elastic 3.) Clean, empty food boxes and tubs 4.) Brown shipping paper 5.) Large cabbage 6.) Knit hat 7.) Hot glue, duct tape, velcro and safety pins to hold the project together 8.) Extra-long grocery receipt
Steps for making this unique Bag of Groceries costume
1.) After collecting your empty boxes of food items, you'll want to glue them together so that they'll look like brand new.2.) The "bag" of groceries is actually a cardboard box, since a real grocery bag isn't sturdy enough to serve as a costume for an active child. Make sure your child fits the box comfortably and can walk around. Attach the elastic to serve as shoulder straps for wearing the costume. Your child's arms will remain outside of the box, so he or she will be able to use them while trick or treating. 3.) Hot glue and tape all the groceries into place, making sure to leave room for your child to get into the costume by fitting it over his/her head. 4.) Add last-minute groceries: Have your child wear a plain, inconspicuous shirt. My daughter wore a black, long-sleeve shirt. Use velcro or other fasteners to add a few last-minute groceries to make the bag look full. 5.) Once the bag is full of groceries, cover the box with brown wrapping paper, the kind used for shipping packages. We folded it to look like the creases in a real grocery bag and taped/glued it into place. 6.) Attach an extra-long grocery receipt to the front of the bag. 7.) Head of Cabbage "hat": The “Head of Cabbage” was the icing on the cake. It is made with a REAL cabbage! First I took the leaves off and cleaned them, after we sprayed them with clear acrylic spray to make them a little hard and shiny. Once they dried we placed them on a green knit hat and glued, safety pinned and sewed them on the hat. To finish it off we sprayed them with spray glue and sprinkled fine silver glitter on to give it a wet look. With that, my little bag of groceries was complete. Word of warning! I made the cabbage hat too early and it began to smell and wilt! We fixed it for trick or treating and just told everyone that it was the "Manager's special" and it was marked down. It would be better to make the hat on the day it is needed and store it in the refrigerator.
