The Scarecrow Movie Costume

Use your GOOD craft's skills to make this BAD guy's outfit!

Don't "go insane" looking for Halloween costume ideas this year. Put together the famous Scarecrow Movie Costume made by Richard Williamson from Arizona...and save your bizarre antics to make the outfit "come alive!" Batman's nemesis never looked better! Discover how Richard created the look on the rest of this page.

How to make "The Scarecrow" movie costume

by Richard Williamson

The Scarecrow is a famous comic book and movie costume that any Batman fan will recognize instantly. Even if you're the ultimate good guy, sometimes it's fun to step out on Halloween night playing a role where you get to do a little bit of "fun menacing" towards your family and friends!

You'll need a long list of items to put this homemade movie costume together, so it's best to assemble them before beginning. It's nice, too, if you can have a dedicated workspace to use during the course of making your project.

Here's the list of materials--- 9' x 11' canvas, burlap, black string, white twine, 5 black leather belts, brown corduroy pants, white dress shirt, brown tie, brown boots, sheet metal, pvc pipe and caps, metal air duct clamps, thick burlap, irrigation tubing, cosmetic syringes, brown cotton gloves, masking tape, black duck tape, black electrical tape, various spray paints and glues, metal wire, long hemp rope.

As you can tell from the pictures in the slide show above, I also had a few extra props that I could use...a scythe and a pitchfork. Be sure to buy blunt, plastic versions of these sharp instruments that are meant to be used as Halloween props. You wouldn't want to injure yourself or your friends while playing around!

Making the parts of The Scarecrow's Costume

How I made the Scarecrow's gloves

Batman's nemesis doesn't wear gloves to keep his hands warm---they're menacing weapons! You'll want to take your time on this part of the project so that they'll look convincing.

I started by cutting a 6"x6" piece of sheet metal and covering the edges with black duct tape. I cut pvc piping into two 6" pieces and glued caps on the ends before gluing them to the metal sheet. I attached two 6" metal duct clamps with screws to the pipes, then glued thickly layered burlap cloth to the bottom of the metal. I then screwed holes into the end caps and attached irrigation tubing. Next, I attached cosmetic syringes to the gloves and attached tubing to the syringes with super glue. Various amounts of spray paint were also used over the course of the process to give the gloves the coloring I wanted.

How to make the Scarecrow's strait jacket

If you're a Batman fan, then you already know that The Scarecrow's real name is Dr. Jonathan Crane...and that he was a psychiatrist at the fictitious Arkham Asylum. Yet, this is one psychiatrist who's actually in NEED of a great deal of help himself!

To make this strait jacket, I took a large 9'x11' canvas and cut out a basic coat pattern with extended height and arm length for giving it a straight jacket "look." It was sewn together with the back open. I cut and attached black leather belts to the back as security straps. I shredded the arms for practicality and for a more disheveled look. Prior to finishing, I sewed a name tag on, then aged and weathered the jacket using spray paint.

How to make the Scarecrow's Mask

Why did The Scarecrow need a mask? Batman already knew who he was! But, the mask is a defining component of this classic movie & comic book costume, and no Scarecrow costume can be complete without it!

For my version of the Scarecrow's mask, I cut a shape that would fit my head out of regular burlap. Next it was sewn, making various cuts and then stitching them back together with thick twine. (This gave the mask an equivalent of "scars.") I cut eye holes and a mouth hole, sewing back the mouth with contrasting coarse black yarn. I aged and gave color to the mask with light greasepaint and spray paint.

Finishing off the Scarecrow costume

After the mask, gloves and straight jacket were finished, the Scarecrow costume was nearly done.

I used corduroy pants which were stitched with white twine to go under the suit. The other tools which were used for prop weapons were aged with stain and paint.

Although you see me wearing this costume with a rope noose around the neck, do NOT make a real noose and put it over your head! If you trip & fall, if the rope gets caught on something (or if someone plays around with the cord as a prank) the noose could tighten and kill you! Injuries and even deaths have actually happened before on Halloween to people wearing similar costumes!

Cut the back loop of your noose and secure the pieces to your costume so that it only LOOKS like a complete noose. That way, people can tug & tug on the rope trying to tease you, but the noose absolutely can NOT tighten!

Trust me, when you're wearing this costume, people WILL play with the loose ends of the rope! ALWAYS play it safe by cutting the back of the noose so it can't hurt you. You wouldn't want THIS Halloween to be your LAST Halloween!
