Original Ghost in Chains Costume

You'll be the most lavish ghost in town when you make this deluxe, multi-layered costume!

In the slide show above, you're viewing pics of the eerie Ghost in Chains costume created by Sandy Fischer of Indiana. This isn't your mother's ghost costume! Lavishly layered with 4 types of fabric, the costume is then decorated with chains and skulls to complete the look. If you'd like your ghost costume to turn heads next Halloween, following Sandy's instructions can help you make this fun...and scary...costume.

Original Ghost in Chains costume instructions

by Sandy Fischer

With nice-looking costumes for sale at every Walmart, grocery and drug store, nobody uses a "sheet over the head" as a costume these days.

But ghost costumes don't have to be plain, and they don't have to be boring. They can even get downright scary...if you put a little imagination into the outfit!

By using the art of layering, and choosing some of todays specialized Halloween fabrics and trims, you can make a head-turning ghost costume that's both unique and scary!

Here are the materials you'll need:

1.) Fabrics: Burlap, regular sheet, 'creepy cloth', and 'spider webs.'

2.) Decorations: Small and large skulls; chains; optional strobe light

3.) Makeup (optional): Green, Yellow & Black fact paint, Halloween moss, and a small amount of liquid latex.

Making the Ghost in Chains Costume

You can make a sewn or a no-sew version of the Ghost in Chains costume. For the costume you see in the pictures above, I sewed the burlap into a dress type costume and layered it with sheet several times. But, if you don't sew, then simply cutting a hole in the material for the head will work, too.

Next to the skin, you'll need a layer of soft fabric. I first tried the burlap next to the skin, but the kids itched like crazy! After the soft layer, build up the layers of burlap, torn sheeting, "creepy cloth" and "spider web" to completely cover the wearer. A ghost costume that's too thin looks only "OK;" while a fully built-up amount of layers makes for having a well-dressed ghost.

If you're going to use face makeup, you'll next want to apply it. A layer of fabric will later go over the head...but your child may not wish to stay fully covered for the entire evening. Having makeup in place will keep the costume looking great even when the face is exposed.

For this costume's makeup, I used a little bit of green, yellow, and black face paint, Halloween moss, and a small amount of liquid latex. (Important: You have to test the latex for an allergy before you use it.) Instead of latex, spirit gum would also work to adhere the moss.

Now it's time to drape the head. I used purchased "creepy cloth" to cover the face and then added spider webs. And what you can't see in the photograph is the strobe light. I bought a small strobe light and fixed it into my son's costume so that when turned it on you could hear the creepy sounds from it and see the flashes shining up under his face.

Last of all, apply the chains and skull decorations to the outer layer of the costume...as artfully as possible.

With any luck, you'll be a home town celebrity on Halloween night! Last Halloween, complete strangers kept stopping my son to take his photo!

Always be safe!

This ghost costume is fun to wear, but does cause some limitation of vision. Always be sure to accompany your child when he or she is wearing this ghost costume. In addition to the costume's limited vision, there are pieces of fabric that could catch on trees and bushes...or even come into accidental contact with a Jack-o-lantern's candle. If you're there to keep an eye out for possible mishaps, then you can take care of any problems which arise unexpectedly.
