How to make a Magician & Bunny costume...and a giant rabbit's hat, too!

by Tonya Roy

This is a 3 part costume consisting of the magician's suit and supplies; the bunny rabbit's costume; and a giant black top hat (from which the rabbit appears. Making this costume in three stages is the best idea. Let's start with the giant Magician's Hat.

Here's a list of supplies you'll need to make the Magician's Hat:

1.) Refrigerator or TV box

2.) yardstick and pencil

3.) 5 yards black shiny vinyl fabric

4.) black duct tape

5.) heavy fishing line

6.) hot glue

7.) Exacto knife to punch the holes

How to make the Magician's Hat

Step 1: Cut two cardboard circles 37” in diameter from a refrigerator or TV box. (We'll call these piece 1 and piece 2.) This size will be large enough for 2 slender adults to fit inside. Cutting the circles 24” in diameter should be small enough for a child's version of the costume.

Step 2: Cut a 25” diameter circle out of the middle of each of the cardboard circles (both pieces 1 and 2), leaving a 6” brim. Each cardboard circle will now look like a ring or a washer. A child size hat might only have a 4” brim.

Step 3: Measure the inside circumference of the brim. The inside of my brim is about 82”.

Step 4: Measure a piece of shiny vinyl fabric about 38” wide by 82” long, to hang from the inside of the brim. Adjust the 38” if you want your hat taller or shorter.

Step 5: Using black duct tape, tape the vinyl fabric so it hangs from the inside of piece #1 cardboard circle. Staple the tape to the cardboard for extra security.

Step 6: Hot-glue cardboard piece #2 onto piece # 1 so the black duct tape is sandwiched in between the two cardboard pieces.

Step 7: Cut shiny vinyl fabric to cover top and bottom of the brim and hot-glue the fabric in place. This may take several pieces since the brim is so large and circular.

Step 8: (Optional) Punch 4 sets of small holes, 2 sets in front and 2 sets in back and attach heavy fishing line so the hat can hang over your shoulders like suspenders.

Making the Bunny Rabbit costume

Even beginners can make this no-sew bunny costume!

List of Materials: Here are the items needed for the bunny costume:

1.) White Salsa dress
2.) Long sleeve Lycra top
3.) White gloves
4.) White stretchy hood
5.) Bunny ears
6.) White tights
7.) White ballroom dance shoes
8.) Large Styrofoam ball for tail
9.) Woolly fabric to cover Styrofoam ball
10.) Bobby pins painted white to secure woolly fabric to Styrofoam ball
11.) Velcro, one side sewn onto Styrofoam ball, the other side sewn onto rear of dress.

Since all of these components are purchased pre-made, very little sewing ability is needed to make this bunny suit. In fact, it's ALMOST a no-sew bunny costume!

The Bunny's fuzzy little tail is made of whatever woolly fabric you like best from your local fabric store. Simply wrap the furry fabric around a Styrofoam ball and secure with white bobby pins (or other fastener.) To attach the tail to the dress, simply apply Velcro to both the "cotton tail" and the dress.

Assembling the outfit is easy. Place the shirt under the white dress. Add the long gloves to cover the rest of the hands & arms, and the white tights to cover your lets. Put on the hood and place the bunny ears over them. These are often attached to a headband; you may secure the headband to the hood to keep them from falling off.

How to make the Magician's Outfit

This no-sew Magician's costume is assembled from items you may already have at home!

Items needed for magician costume:

1. Black dress pants
2. Black dance shoes
3. Black top hat
4. Magic Wand
5. 3’ by 3’ squares of colorful fabric to represent a magician’s scarves
6. Vest
7. Bow tie (optional)
8. Black cape (optional)
9. Glow-in-the-dark magic tricks (optional)

If you don't have a top hat, they can be found in all price ranges; an inexpensive costume-quality hat will work just fine. If your local costume store doesn't carry them, you'll find a wide assortment of choices online.

Putting on the pieces of the costume is the easy part. What you'll need to practice is a bit of "magician's finesse." You'll want to wave your wand, perhaps do a few other magic tricks...then, voila, make the rabbit appear from the hat as if by magic!

My husband and I both love to dance. Since the life-size hat is removable, I can take it off for ballroom dancing. However, we made the hat large enough so we can both fit inside and slow dance (with the fishing line hanging over our shoulders holding up the hat so we can have our hands free.) At the end of the dance, we like to lift the life-size hat above our heads with us inside and hold it there while we kiss before climbing out of the hat!
