How to make a Pringles costume
by Rana Cook
If you're looking for a very easy and very cute costume, this is it! There's just one warning: you'll get very hungry while putting together this fun food-themed costume! Be sure to buy enough cans of Pringles so you can copy the designs...AND satisfy your Pringles cravings at the same time!Aside from the Pringles, here are the few other materials you'll need. It's best to assemble them in advance. * 2 Red Posterboards; 1 yellow poster board; 2 white posterboards * Aluminum foil * Colored markers & pencils * Scissors or Exacto knife * Glue, tape * Ruler or yard stick
Forming the Pringle's "can"
The bulk of the Pringles Can Costume is made of colored poster board.I taped 2 red poster boards together for the tube. Before you go any farther in making the costume, have your child slip this basic form overhead to make sure it's a comfortable size. For a younger child, you may have to cut down the size of the poster boards, because it wouldn't be any fun at all for your child to walk around overburdened by a super-giant can all evening. You'll want to cut armholes at just the right level for your child's head to stick out of the top of the Pringles Can. Then, it's time to make the "lid."
How to make the Pringles Can lid
A lid is a cute accent for your Pringles can costume. It's also a bit of a necessity. Other kids will be pretending to grab & eat Pringles all night long as your child tries to go trick or treating. The lid will help keep them from sticking their hands down the front of your child's costume.I cut a circle of poster board for the lid in a size just barely larger than the edge of the "can." Next, I made a cutout for my child's head to fit in. For the rim of the lid, I cut 3 inch strips of poster board and taped them around the circle. I then covered the lid with aluminum foil. The lid was then finished, and ready to try on to make sure that it fit properly. For further decoration, I cut out a 3-4 inch strip of posterboard and covered it with foil to place around the bottom edge of the "can."
Is it hard to make the Pringles Can lettering?
The last step before you're finished is adding the Pringles lettering and the picture of the Pringles Man.Is it hard to duplicate? That answer will depend on whether or not you have developed an "artistic eye." It will be easier for moms and dads who already have experience with making crafts projects. But even so, all it takes is practice. The trick is DON'T DRAW THE LETTERING DIRECTLY ONTO THE PRINGLES CAN! If you do that, you'll be throwing away LOTS of poster paper before you finally get everything right! Instead, make one letter at a time. I drew the letters free-handed onto the yellow poster board with a pencil. For minor mistakes, I simply erased. For major goof-ups, I simply started that letter over. After a number of attempts you WILL end up with a good-looking group of letters that look reasonably like the Pringles logo when you place them together. Remember: people DO know what a Pringles can looks like...but they DON'T have every little line memorized! Once you have your letters made, cut them out with the scissors or Exacto knife and set them aside. Draw or trace a circle onto one of your white poster boards which will be used as the Pringle Man's face. Then, also using the white poster board, make the small letters that say "original." Time to put your picture and lettering onto your Pringles can! Locate the spot where you want to place the head. Before gluing it into place, make sure you'll have enough room to put your "Pringles" and "Originals" lettering. When you're satisfied with the spacing, glue everything into place starting with the Pringle Man's face, then the Pringles letters, and finally the "original" lettering. Completing the Pringle Man's Face: If you're confident of your drawing ability, you can use markers to draw his hair, eyes, mustache and bow tie directly onto the costume. Otherwise, practice making the shapes on your white poster board...and when they're perfect, color them, cut them out and glue them into place.
Making the "Nutritional Information" sheet
Now, you'll need your 2nd piece of white poster board, or some other large, white piece of paper. Cut it to the size that you'd like for the back of the Pringle's can.Use your ruler or yardstick to make straight lines in the appropriate places of your "Nutrition Facts" box. Then, pencil-in the words that you'll be writing. Finally, cover over the pencil version with a black permanent marker. You'll find it very handy to have both a thin and a fat marker, because some markings are thicker than other. The scanner bar code can also be made in this same way, then glued onto your nearly-completed Pringles can. Optional: There's still more information printed on a real Pringles can that needs to go onto the costume if you want to be 100% authentic. However, this information goes directly onto the red poster board...and unless you're very sure of yourself, you could mess up the entire costume just as you're nearly finished. You may decide that it's best to omit this minor info from your costume. Or, as an alternative, you could write the information on a small piece of red poster board, then glue it into place. And that's it! You're all ready for trick-or-treat time! My daughter loved her costume, and she was a "hit" with her friends and all who saw her!
