Homemade Predator Costume
It's not easy to make this good-looking AVP suit...but persistent fans can do it!
In the slides above, you're viewing pictures of a homemade Predator costume made by Victor Lushnikov of Pennsylvania. A die-hard fan of the movies, Victor struggled to get the look of his costume just right. Here's how he did it!
How to make the AVP Predator Costume
by Victor Lushnikov
You'll need a long list of materials to make this Predator movie costume; it's best to get them assembled before you start:1 Piece of wood. Long stick/Bamboo Long piece of Fur Belt Old Hockey Leg Pads Old Football Chest Pads Old Football Thigh Pads BodyNetting/BodyStocking Muscle Shirt Thermal Pants/White Pants Paint (Brown, Black, Silver) Vampire Cape Predator Mask (Latex--purchased) Predator Gloves (Latex--purchased) Skeleton Feet (Latex--purchased) Old pair of shoes Funnel (Car/oil funnel) Toy Water Gun Cardboard pieces Handful of bolts Screwdriver Velcro pieces Duct Tape Straws Magnets Old Hat/Cap Old/New Shoe Laces Chain/Laces Hot glue gun Super Glue Saw Skull Decorations (Small Skulls)
Steps in making the Predator Costume
Allow plenty of time for this project. It took me about a month!1) Start gathering your supplies FIRST! (Do NOT start without having ALL of the supplies, you will forget or mess up) 2) Buy Skeleton Feet ($10) and stick in your old shoes. Paint the skeleton feet brown/Predator color. After it dries, apple another coat to make it nice and smooth. After, use black spray paint to outline nails and in-between the toes+lines. 3) Use old or new hockey pads (DO NOT BUY! Ask around if anyone has any old pairs of pads, if not, buy cheap used ones on eBay) Paint the fabric brown and add black spots. 4) Take a piece of cardboard and outline 4 pieces of "V" and one piece of "D" shaped armor, paint is silver and outline the corners wit black. 5) Screw in the cardboard to the hockey pads for maximum hold and re-paint again. Take a brush, and add designs if you want to. Do that for BOTH pads. 6) Take cardboard and cut out SMALLER pieces, just like in step 4, but make sure they fit on the THIGH pads. After repeating for the thigh pads, spray paint them and outline. Add 2 Pairs of shoe laces to each of the thigh pads (top and bottom) to tie around your leg when you wear them. 7) Go to Michaels or Jo-Ann's and buy fabric...brown or black fabric. Cut out two Triangle shaped fabrics. One for your butt, another for your front/pelvis area. After they are cut, stitch them together to make one large/long piece. Then, cut out belt loops up top in order to fit a belt through. Put belt through, and you will have finished the bottom of the costume. 8) Take your thermal/white pants and die them so they look brown/like Predator skin. (Predator pictures can be found on Google. Light brown/dark brown.) Then add stripes and black spots to the thermals, and you will have now finished the bottom of your Predator outfit. ESTIMATED TIME - 1-1 1/2 weeks to this point. 9) Get your Muscle Shirt (Best to buy a Rambo muscle shirt/costume) Paint it darker brown to match your pats. Add black outlines on muscles and add spots around them, throughout the body and muscles. 10) Buy a FULL body NET suit, also known as a Body Stocking or Body Net Suit. Next, try on the pants + the muscle shirt, and put the stocking over it; if it stretches out and fits, you are ready to finish up the costume. 11) Also, while you buy your muscle shirt, buy a Vampire cape (IF YOU WOULD LIKE ONE) It is not required, but makes the Predator stand out a little more. 12) Take your skulls, and paint them silver. Add other bones, paint them silver as well. Make holes in the skulls and bones, and fit a chain or shoe lace through for the Predator's "Collection" of skulls/dead people. 13) Take your football pads, and paint them silver. Add black outlining and trim. Also add your own little designs. 14) Once paint has dried, screw in the funnel, to the LEFT side of the BACK of the shoulder pads, for his shoulder cannon. 15) Cut out triangle shaped pieces, and cover up the backback/funnel of the cannon. 16) Now get your water gun and unscrew/saw off the handle. Take a screw, and screw the gun to the funnels tube. Paint everything silver again and add your little designs. ESTIMATED TIME - 1 week. Now that you have finished with the body, all that is left are the Mask, Hands and Staff. 17) Take your piece of card board, and cut out two "blades" that will fit into the RIGHT glove. (There should already be a section for the blades in the latex glove) Just cut a small opening and put them in. Use duct tape, and tape them in tightly through the inside. Paint the blades silver and add some design. 18) After blades have been cut and placed in the RIGHT glove, take the left glove. Cut out a piece of rectangular cardboard and duct tape it to the inside top of the left glove. Cut out the glove piece ABOVE the cardboard on 3 of the sides (for the keypad) leave the back (farthest side on other side of arm) uncut in order to open and close. Take Velcro, and add pieces of Velcro so that the keypad will close. Paint anything black if needed. Take RED/GREEN/ORANGE straws and cut out pieces about .5 inch in length and create symbols for the "Predator" language. The symbols up to you. Make it fun. Make sure it closes with Velcro. Now your gloves are done. 19) Take the mask and an old hat. Cut of the rim of the hat and add Velcro to the top, also add Velcro to the inside of mask, place hat on your head and try on the mask. the Velcro should hold mask in place so it doesn't move around much. 20) Add the magnet; super glue it to the inside of mask. Cut off the straps on the COVER of the mask. (Mask cover that goes on the mask) (Predators armor piece, comes with latex mask) Super glue magnets onto the cover piece of mask on inside, make sure it is lined up with the magnets on the INSIDE of the mask as well. Now you should be able to put on, and take off cover without straps. 21) Add designs and little marks on mask cover (FRONT) for nicer look. 22) Take a long rod/stick/or bamboo stick and paint it black. Use left over fabric and make a handle in the center. (Grip) not add silver to the middle and ends of the stick/staff. Use the remaining wood to cut out HALF "U" shaped blades. Super glue the blades onto the spear/rod/staff on BOTH sides. NOT THE EDGE! but near the grip/fabric. Make sure blades faces UP/AWAY from your hand. Paint blades silver.ESTIMATED TIME - 1 - 1 1/2 weeks. AFTER EVERYTHING IS FINISHED, add some more designs and details, more paint to make it smooth, and your Predator costume will be done! TAKE YOUR TIME! DO NOT RUSH!It should take you a good MONTH if you work on it EVERYDAY for at least a few hours.
