Girl's Zombie Cheerleader Costumes
This fun homemade costume and makeup will give your kids some Halloween cheer!
In the slide show above, you're viewing pictures of the Zombie Cheerleader costumes and makeup that Brenda Hargrove of Illinois made for her 3 girls. On this page, Brenda will tell you how she created this fun-but-scary look for her family!
How to make the Zombie Cheerleader dresses
If you don't know how to sew, you can use store-bought cheerleader costumes to create your Zombie outfits. However, sewing is a favorite hobby of mine, and so I enjoyed being able to make these outfits for my daughters. You can purchase cheerleader costume patterns at your local fabric store, but if you're experienced at sewing, you might wish to try making your own pattern like I did. It's easier than you might think! I used my girl's skirts and tank tops for the project. I cut the pattern pieces out of paper, making each one about 2 inches bigger than their real skirts and tops...so that the girls could wear extra layers of clothing underneath. Our Halloween nights here in Illinois are always quite chilly! I used the bias tape for trim around the neck and sleeves, and for trim on the bottom of the skirt. The Z---for Zombie High!---was cut from a felt square. Purchased pom poms in colors that matched the dresses finished off the outfit. Here's the list of materials I needed to make the girl's cheerleading costumes: Fabric--5 1/2 yards for 3 costumes Bias tape for trim Felt for "letter" decoration
Making and applying the Zombie Makeup
Here are the materials I needed for the Zombie Cheerleader's makeup:Fake skin from a Halloween store Packets of unflavored gelatin Glycerin Red, black and green face paint The Zombie Makeup: Mix a 1/4 oz package of unflavored gelatin, a couple of drops of glycerin, and a teaspoon of boiling water. As soon as it cools (it will cool fast) spread it on your zombie's face. As it cools, it will get sticky and make some good effects! I mixed up one gelatin package at a time because it sets up fast. Next, using the fake skin purchased from a Halloween store, I rolled 2 pieces like snakes, put them on my zombie's forehead, then smoothed the outside edges down to make a gash. Then for a different effect, I flattened out another piece of fake skin and that became a flap of skin hanging off her cheek. Red face paint mixed with a little black, applied with a brush, went into the gash, and also under the hanging skin and into the nooks and crannies of the gelatin mix. I put in a little green for a moldy look. The 3 faces took less than an hour to complete!
