How to make this cute Girl's Pirate Princess Dress
by Trish Napier
This fluffy, feminine Pirate Princess outfit is fairly easy to make, and your daughter will surely love it as much as mine did! Before beginning, you'll need to buy a few items at your local fabric store and assemble them in a spot where you'll have room to work. Here's the list of materials you'll need: One stretchable elastic head band for the tutu skirt's belt; 15 yards of Tulle (red, black and white mixed...or else your favorite colors); 1 black ballet leotard; 1 red head band (printed with skulls, if possible,) 1 bag of loot coins; 1/2 yard of red and white striped fabric for the corset; 1 yard red ribbon; black tights; rhinestones; paint.
Making the pirate girl's tutu skirt
To make the tutu skirt, cut strips of tulle fabric into 3-foot lengths. (If your child is older and taller than my 4-year-old seen in the pictures above, you may wish to cut the strips a bit longer.)Simply take the tulle strips and tie them one by one onto the elastic head band; the head band will be used as the skirt's waist band. You'll want to tie the strips to the headband at the half-way point, so that the length of the skirt will be 1 1/2 ft long. Tie as many strips on until the tutu is as full as you like. I used three different colors. You'll want to alternate them so that the stripes look evenly balanced. This tutu skirt will be worn over a set of leotards and tights. If you choose other colors of tulle (rather than black, white and red,) you may wish to purchase your leotard and tights in a different color that will make a better match. I chose the black, white and red theme because they're very "pirate-like," and yet because the tulle is so delicate, these colors look very feminine when used in this outfit.
Making the pirate's bandana
For the Pirate Princess headpiece, I just bought a skull-printed red head band from Walmart. Yet, I wanted my princess costume to have a more exotic look than the headband alone could make. So, I bought some faux coins in the fabric department and hand stitched them onto the headband so that they dangled. As you can see in the pictures above, they give the outfit a dressier look. I also had my daughter wear hoop earrings with the outfit. We kept makeup at a minimum, but you could use regular cosmetics, sparkles...or even face paint, if you wish...to customize your outfit.
Making the Pirate Girl's Corset
You may think that making the costume's corset was difficult, but it really wasn't.I just took the red and white fabric that I had chosen to match the outfit and folded it in half. Then, I cut it into the size I needed to make a thick corset-type belt for my daughter's waist. I didn't sew the ends at all; it would have been sturdier if I would have. However, this costume was only going to be used for Halloween night, so I didn't feel there was a need to finish off the raw edges. Next, I cut little slits in the front of it and laced the red ribbon through to make it look like a corset. Once again, it would have been sturdier if I'd have used metal eyelets or reinforced the holes by sewing. However, simply slitting the fabric was sufficient for a costume meant to be worn on only one evening.
A painted pumpkin finished off the "look"
Although it's optional, I painted a cute little pumpkin to go along with the outfit. I also added rhinestones as decorations. My daughter simply LOVED her "bedazzled" pumpkin so much! She kissed, and kissed, and kept kissing it the whole entire time I shot her Halloween costume pictures!
Always Be Safe! The Pirate Princess skirt is frilly, and fans out in a wide circle around the wearer. Therefore, the tulle fabric can potentially get caught on the twigs or leaves of bushes...and other hazards such as Halloween yard decorations. It's always best to stay near your daughter when she's wearing this costume to assist with any mishaps, if necessary.
