Feathery Girls Angel Costume

Frilly and feminine, this beautiful angel costume looks simply Heavenly!

In the slides above, you're viewing pictures of the magnificent feathery girl's angel costume designed by Leslie Ryan of West Virginia. Although Leslie's daughter wore this splendid Angel's dress as a Halloween costume, it would look right at home in a Christmas pageant or play, as well. On this page, you'll discover Leslie's hints and tips for making your own toddle, preschooler or tween a similar angel's outfit.

How to make the Feathery Girl's Angel Costume

by Leslie Ryan

As you can tell from the pictures of the angel costume above, my daughter was so radiantly happy with her costume. Her costume was well-liked by everyone at her party...and she can't wait for Christmas to come so she can wear it again.

No sewing is involved, which makes this a good costume for anyone who would like a lovely homemade angel's dress, but lacks the sewing skills usually needed to make one!

List of materials for Angel's costume:

* 2 tubes of White Tulle fabric (if you use fabric bolts instead of tubes, it makes the tulle harder to work with for this project. You want to work with a single layer of tulle)
* White Ribbon
* Hot Glue
* Spray on Silver Glitter
* White Feathers, about 6 bags
* 5 White Wire Hangers
* 2 White Feather Boas
* Silver Glitter
* Spray on Glue
* White Tights and White Tank top
* Silver Shoes
* Scissors
* Wire Cutters

How to make the no-sew angel costume

Be sure to choose a width of tulle fabric that can wrap completely around your daughter.

Next, take your tube of fabric and make multiple long loops of fabric the length you want your angel dress to be. I draped the tulle over my friend's arm and let it fall to the floor...and brought the bolt back up to arm-level (repeating this action many times) because I was making a full, floor-length costume. The more loops of tulle you make, the fuller and fluffier your finished costume will be.

There are some other methods of making tulle costumes in which you have to tie many, many strands of tulle to a base of elastic or ribbon. That's a good method, too...but my method saves lots of time. You only have to tie the tulle one time---after your giant loop has enough layers in it to please you.

Once your giant loop of tulle is built up to the thickness you want, take one of your feather boas and slip it through the loop. Fit the unfinished costume around your daughter's chest just under the armpits to make sure it will tie completely around her. (She will be wearing white clothing under the outfit for modesty's sake, but the tulle must cover all the way around in order to look good. Wearing a tank top or other shirt will also keep the tulle from feeling scratchy.)

Now, it's time to cut the bottom of the tulle into layers! Just cut, it doesn't have to be perfect. In fact, if your cutting isn't perfectly even, that will give the costume a "whispy" multi-level look. At this point, the angel costume will still look far from finished. But don't worry; after you finish decorating the dress, it will look fabulous!

Use pieces of your second boa to make straps for the dress. Use hot glue or fabric glue to add feathers to the dress where you want them (being sure to save plenty for the wings and halo.)

You can now make a bow out of the ribbon and put it on the front of the dress. Put a couple more strands of ribbon throughout the dress, even in the back where the ends meet.

Take your spray on glue and spray the dress and sprinkle silver glitter all over it. By now, the dress will be looking quite fancy...and it's time to work on the "wings" and "halo" accessories!

How to make the Angel's Wings

For the wings, take 2 wire coat hangers for each side; it takes 4 total to make the complete wing shape. Use white coat hangers, if available. (Remove the "C" shaped part of the coat hanger, of course.)

Shape a separate piece of coat hanger or other sturdy wire to be the center point of the wings; this is where all 4 pieces will connect and be held together (using wire or sturdy white duct tape.)

Once you've got the basic structure of the wings assembled and held together tightly, then it's time to decorate the wings. Use hot glue to attach dozens of feathers to the wings. Lastly, take your spray-on glitter and spray the wings so that they'll sparkle. Once your daughter is wearing the finished angel dress, you may use the remaining small pieces of white boa to attach the wings to the back of the dress.

How to make the Angel's Halo

Some people make halos which somehow attach to the wearer's head.

With this costume, I attached the halo directly to the wings. I felt this would certainly be more comfortable for my active daughter...and would be less likely to let the halo tilt to the wrong angle while she's wearing it.

The halo's frame is made out of wire. I attached a long piece of wire upward from the wings, then made the halo by forming a circle shape on top. Then, I hot-glued feathers to the halo, and glitter-sprayed the halo, as well.

How long did it take me to make this no-sew angel's costume? It took about 5 hours to make the whole thing, once I had all the materials purchased and supplies assembled. If you have no experience with crafts or with using hot glue, you should allow several hours longer. Don't get discouraged. The costume looks really terrific only after all the decorations have been applied. Just when it seems like it not coming together, it will! You'll put it on your daughter, arrange the shape of the wings, adjust the straps and bows...and she'll look fabulous!

Always Be Safe!

This darling angel's costume is bulky, and the wings & halo extend beyond your child's normal height and width. She'll have a bit of risk, therefore, of getting her costume snagged on trees and bushes, bopping into narrow doorways or low-hanging limbs, etc. Always stay with your daughter when she's wearing this costume, and you'll be able to make sure that she has a safe and wonderful Halloween or Christmas while wearing this costume.
